New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public across Albuquerque and surrounding Bernalillo County for at least 30 days in response to a spate of gun violence. The suspension applies to open and concealed carry in most public places, from city sidewalks to urban recreational parks. The firearms suspension is classified as an emergency public health order and will likely face legal challenges.
Open primaries and rank choice initiative will likely make the ballot. The organizers of the initiative have a hard time explaining how ranked choice voting would work.
On Aug. 30th, Neal and Julie interviewed Secretary of State Phil McGrane and when asked about the initiative, McGrane said, “I’m not weighing in specifically on the initiative…there is a question both about the changes that they’re looking to make towards our primaries which is very distinctly different than the rank choice voting that they’re talking about at the general election…I will say that from where we sit, the state of Idaho is not prepared to implement rank choice voting at this point in time. Our voting equipment doesn’t handle rank choice voting. So, I think there are going to be a lot of questions”. Click here for the full interview.
