RIGBY, Idaho (KIFI) – Rigby’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) lined up Friday to pay tribute to the heroes who died on September 11, 2001, at Ground Zero in New York City.
The veterans, from VFW Post #1004, shared the significance of the event in American history on the 25th anniversary of 9-11 at South Rigby Park.
“9-11 holds a special spot for me because I didn’t know anybody there. But some similar things happened in El Salvador when I was there,” said Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1004 Commander Jim Stringham. “It always kind of gets to me that, you know, the United States is not invulnerable from an attack.”
A bagpiper filled the air with the stirring notes of ‘Amazing Grace.’
Afterward, an honor guard of former U.S. armed service members presented a rifle salute in tribute to the lives lost that fateful day.
“We need to keep America strong. We need to keep the love and kindness that our country has provided not only the citizens, but many others in the world as well,” said Ron Sathre, from American Legion Post 20.
The veterans held a moment of silence before solemnly striking a ship’s bell eight times to commemorate the attacks.
