Prop One and U.S. Senate candidate Todd Achilles featured at Rexburg voter forum

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) – Election Day is just under a month away. Monday night, Rexburg voters had the chance to hear more about what will be on the ballot this November.

Proposition One, the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act Initiative, was front and center at the Romance Theater.

Sponsored by the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the forum featured leaders from both sides of the debate.

Proposition One

Idahoans United for Women & Families Executive Director Melanie Folwell helped organize the Proposition One campaign.

“What is really important to know is that Idaho’s near total trigger ban has really thrown us into chaos over these last four years – and our Legislature, who allows for the fact that changes need to be made,” Folwell said. “We are one of only five states with no exception for health of the mother, no exception for a fatal fetal diagnosis.”

Idaho Chooses Life Spokeswoman Julianne Young disagreed.

“Proposition One, if passed, would allow elective abortion, no questions asked for any reason up to viability, which is an undefined point that will be determined case by case,” Young said. “We don’t know what this means, because the the drafters of Proposition One did not use our traditional definition of viability. So while people claim that this is a a return to Rowe era, policy, it is so very different.”

U.S. Senate Race

U.S. Senate candidate Todd Achilles, who is challenging U.S. Senator Jim Risch next month, also spoke at the event.

He addressed what he sees as some of the biggest issues facing Idaho voters.

“I’ve heard two things across the political spectrum everybody in Idaho agrees on – ‘Congress is broken and this economy is rigged. I’m struggling to get by. My kids don’t even have the chance that I do,'” Achilles said. “Idahoans are fed up with a political system and an economic system that’s just not working for them anymore. That’s why I’m running against 83 year old Jim Risch, who seems to be of the mind that he’s kind of entitled to return to the Senate for a fourth term.”

Risch or a representative from his campaign were invited to the event, but were unable to participate.
